Dinner at Citron Fitzwilliam Hotel, Dublin

Deciding on a restaurant in Dublin for Valentines Day can seem like mission impossible. Perfectly nice places that would be dreamily romantic any other day of year are suddenly more crowded than your average Burger King would be at 3am on a Saturday night.

An exception to this rule was Citron at the Fitzwilliam Hotel. Listed as one of the most romantic restaurants in Dublin, it did not disappoint as unlike every other restaurant in Dublin on Valentine’s there was yards of space between the tables, the set menu was fairly priced, and they made no attempt to rush you through your meal so they could get the next couple in.

Citron has a reputation of being quite funky and I could see why as soon as I walked through the door. The decor is ‘modern minimalist’ with a bright green colour scheme. I generally tend not to like minimalist styles in restaurants as they can make a place rather cold but somehow Citron got away with it.

In honour of the celebration, Head Chef Philip Mahon had created a special three course menu with an emphasis on sharing.. of course there were solo options as well if you so wished.

We kept with the spirit of things and ordered the Truffle Risotto for two as a starter, but first we were pleasantly surprised with an amuse bouche of crab claws and chutney.

The risotto was superb and as I have previously mentioned I like my risotto so I know this one was particularly tasty. The texture was perfect with the cheesiness and the creaminess being just enough so that you can taste the flavour, without it being too much that the risotto turns to mush.

As a main course we again went for a sharing plate and ordered the Chateaubriand for two. The meat was succulent and tender but my only slight complaint would be the side dishes were nothing to write home about. The potatoes were very plain as were the vegetables.

That being said, the portions were very generous especially given the quality of the meat.

No amount of meat could put me off my dessert, though we did need to take a slight breather!

Once we felt ready to indulge again, a whole 5 minutes later, we ordered the Chocolate Carmel Assiette to share.

What I liked about the dessert was that there was lots of it. What I didn’t like about it was that there was nothing that made my heart skip a beat (ok lame I know).

Don’t get me wrong everything was tasty, well no the macarons weren’t great, but the rest was tasty it just didn’t have the wow factor.

Aside from this I would overall rate the evening highly, the ambience was lovely, the service was great and that risotto…. delicious!

With Love
