Disco Balls and Thai Street Food – DusitD2 Nairobi
When I walk into a bar in Nairobi there are several things I expect to see, a massive glowing face however, was not one of them.

Before I go on about how cool and trendy Nairobi is getting, I think it is necessary and meaningful to mention recent events in Kenya. Just over two weeks ago 147 people, most of whom were students, were shot dead by militant group Al-Shabaab. This devastating attack occurred at a college in Garissa, located in the North of Kenya close to the Somali border.

Aside from the immediate heartbreak, this appalling event has long standing ramifications for Kenya. Tourism is one of the main industries and sources of employment in the country and due to Al – Shabaab it has taken a drastic downfall.
Amani Upendo na Umoja – Peace Love and Unity. My thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones.
I would never recommend to anyone that they visit somewhere that is unsafe but I would like to stress that the attacks have focused on Northern Kenya and the northern coast line, but the game reserves in the south and many of the tourist spots have not been affected. Equally since the attack at Westgate Shopping Mall security in Nairobi has greatly increased.
Kenya is a large and beautiful country which has a lot to offer to travellers. I can only hope that terrorism does not win and that people still come to visit this incredible place. Ok, so the glowing face it turns out was just the start of the very funky and very modern design decor at DusitD2 Nairobi; a boutique hotel and Nairobi’s latest hangout spot.

My Dad first found out about DusitD2 when he went for a business meeting here a few months ago… and yes being important enough to go for business meetings in fancy hotels is definitely my new life goal.

So after having heard good things about this place I was delighted when my parents brought me here for a welcome back dinner over Easter.

There had just been a downpour when we arrived so unfortunately we couldn’t sit outside, but I of course managed to have a snoop around to check it out for next time!
After prancing around in my heels taking photos of all the unique pieces of furniture we sat down for some cocktails at the bar.

I went for the Witch Doctor which was fruity and light and definitely healing!
Treating Myself
My mum went for a vodka tonic which looks the same everywhere in the world so no photos there, but my Dad stepped up and had a gin Martini. The glass looked sexy, the taste… well if you like pure (high quality) ethanol you would love it but I’m personally not a Martini fan.

At this stage I was ravenous so we went to SOI, the hotel’s thai restaurant. Soi means “street” in Thai and the cuisine here is meant to reflect thai street food classics with a contemporary twist.
The lighting was a little off for this photo but I just loved these seats at the entrance, and yes the wall is made of hundreds of empty vodka bottles.

Past the vodka bottles brings you to the main restaurant where you can choose to sit in the central section or in a secluded booth. I know I keep mentioning how much I like booths but sure I’ll say it again… booths are great!
SOI at DusitD2 Nairobi
For starters we shared the Duck Spring Rolls and the Tiger Prawns.

Both were delicious, I especially liked the Tiger Prawns as it was a very generous portion and the sauce had so much flavour.

I couldn’t decide what to have for a main so my Dad and I split the Lamb Curry and the Chicken Stir-Fry.

Again, I couldn’t fault the food, it was all excellent. My favourite was the Chicken as I loved the satay style sauce and the cashew nuts.. yum!

All of the portions here are rather large so we couldn’t manage to fit in a dessert, instead we went back to the bar and ended the evening with some tea.
