How to Spend Sunday in Brussels

Sunday can be an awkward day when you are travelling.

Depending on the city, many shops and restaurants are closed on Sunday leaving you rambling aimlessly around the streets until your flight home.

Brussels in particular, is known for its mass exodus out of the city every Friday night which does not help its cause. However, after asking an expert (aka Michael from my trip to Budapest) we managed to find plenty to do on a Sunday in Brussels.

First on the list is BRUNCH!

Brunch is one of my all time favourite hobbies so I was delighted that Michael suggested it.

We headed to the Saint Gilles neighbourhood which is off the beaten track for tourists but popular among locals. An added bonus is the food market which is on every Sunday.

For brunch we met at Maison du Peuple, a quirky cafe that also serves as a venue for gigs and other cultural events in the evenings. The menu is fairly simple, for brunch you have a choice between ‘vegetarian’ or ‘non-vegetarian’, or you can go against the grain completely and order a croque monsieur.

Of course my favourite was the hot chocolate which came as a glass of milk with buttons of chocolate separate so that you can mix your own.

On Michael’s recommendation we then wandered to Sablon, a historic neighbourhood that is now home to an antique market and an endless selection of chocolate shops.

I think we managed to buy enough chocolate.

Possibly.

From Sablon it is just a short walk to the Grand Place, the famous central square in Brussels.

If you were looking for people on a Sunday in Brussels, well this is where they all are! What had been mostly empty streets suddenly transitions into a hive of activity around this spot.
