Lunch at La Rotonde, Nice

How do French women stay so slim?

Yes I know there is a whole book written on this topic, and come to think of it I really should read it as I have no idea.

It is impossible to go through a meal without bread. Not just one miserable slice of gluten-free fun-free brown bread, but lovely fluffy baguettes and crispy rolls.

Oh and the pastries, J’adore!

Sorry getting distracted with the pastries at Le Negresco’s breakfast

Then of course there is the wine, a must have with lunch and dinner.

Morning Adventures in Monte Carlo

Prepping for Christmas

Well, there is no way I could go to France and not partake in these fabulous culinary traditions. So after dashing around Monte Carlo in the morning I hopped on the train back to Nice to meet up with Helene for lunch at La Rotonde in Le Negresco Hotel (read about my stay here).

La Rotonde is Le Negresco’s casual dining restaurant, though when I say “casual” what I really mean is you can casually day-drink champagne here.

The inside of La Rotonde is designed as an 18th century carousel

I would firstly like to mention that it was basically December and we were still able to sit outside. How is this even fair? I can count on one hand the number of days a year I can sit outside in Dublin.

Olive Tapenade

To celebrate the good weather and the start of our lunch we said to good health before diving into La Rotonde’s specialty, the foie gras.

I was amazed by how large the portion size was, very generous for a starter. The foie gras itself had a lovely smooth texture but the winner for me was the fruit chutney it was served with as it added a kick to the dish.

For the main course we both had cod with a paprika crust served with parsnip mousseline and Spanish bacon.

I could eat this all day, in fact I seriously contemplated ordering it for room service later that night. The cod was light and fresh and the mousseline was warm and filling without being too heavy or creamy.

Dessert in the Sunshine

Of course it ran through my mind at this point that I should really not have dessert but the word “chocolat” was mentioned I just couldn’t resist.

Le Negresco is perhaps better known for its two star Michelin Restaurant “Le Chantecler” but Chef Jean Denis is in charge of the food for La Rotonde as well making it a wonderful alternative if you want great food in less formal setting.
