Luxury Stay: 137 Pillar Suites Bangkok

Out of the hundreds of hotels in Bangkok why did I pick this one?

The pool of course!

I briefly glanced at photos of the rooms to check it wasn’t some kind of bizarre hotel with a luxury pool and hostel style rooms – it wasn’t.

I also did the mandatory price check to make sure I could actually afford said luxury pool – I was pleasantly surprised, 137 Pillars is much more reasonably priced then some of the big name chain hotels.

My friend Anjli and I were flying to Phuket for a wedding but due to flight timings and the lengthy flying time from New York and Dublin respectively, we decided to pitt stop in Bangkok for a night before heading on to the wedding.

THE LOCATION

If you haven’t been to Bangkok then you may not realise how huge the city is, and it feels even bigger when you are stuck in the notorious Bangkok rush hour traffic. Key to our stay was a place that wasn’t too far from the airport. 137 Pillar Suites proved to be perfect as we could reach both airports (Suvarnabhumi International Airport and Don Mueang Airport) within 40 minutes.

The hotel is off the Sukhumvit road in a quieter more residential part of the city. As I arrived a little before Anjli I decided to go for a brief walk and a not so brief shopping trip. The EmQuartier mall is a 15 minute walk from 137 Pillars and is one of Bangkok’s best shopping malls. This large, mainly open air space has a fantastic range of retail stores.

I somehow managed to buy 3 pairs of shoes – all were essential items to add to my wardrobe obviously.

THE ROOM

The room itself was huge – more of a mini apartment than a hotel room. The bed was large and soft and the bathroom was clean and well stocked. You could easily make this place your base for a longer stay.

I especially like the attention to detail in the room – for example the branded wash bag and the stationary set.

FACILITIES

Anjli’s flight ended up getting rather delayed so we saved our pool adventures until the morning. It was just as beautiful as the photos make it seem. There are actually two infinity pools in 137 Pillar Suites – the one that you see in all the adverts is only accessible to those who book top level suites.

If swimming isn’t your thing then there is also a salon and a golf simulator – didn’t manage to check that out so not entirely sure what that entails.

DINING

Right before we had to run off to the airport again Anj and I had breakfast at the Deli / Bistro downstairs. The portion sizes were tiny or “diet specials” but tasty nonetheless, and it was lovely to sit out in the garden, a real treat in a city like Bangkok.

Upstairs on the 27th floor they have Nimitr -an Asian inspired restaurant for a more fine dining experience. One floor above them is Jack Bain’s Bar – a whiskey and cigar haven for your after dinner drinks.

SUMMARY

– Free wifi – Free shuttle to Emquartier Shopping Mall and BTS – Two infinity pools – the one pictured above at night is only open to those who reserve a top floor suite – Large rooms with kitchen facilities – Not exactly in the centre but close to the airports and a nice neighbourhood

Would I stay again? Yes 100% – excellent value for money, loved the pool, and the location.
