Prawn Towers at Hemingways Nairobi

Nairobi is my hometown yet rather disgracefully, this will be its first appearance on Liakada Travel.

On occasion I like to read travel guides to the cities I know well just to see if they are on the same page as me. One of my favourites remarks about Nairobi came from the Lonely Planet, “telling people you like Nairobi is like voicing a guilty secret”.

Average Day in Nairobi

It’s true, Nairobi isn’t everyones cup of tea, the city is chaotic and you never know what each day has in store for you, but if you know your way around, Nairobi has a certain charm and life there can be oh so sweet. Of late it has become quite the cosmopolitan hub with new trendy joints popping up all over the place.

One of my favourite places to go in Nairobi is Hemingways Hotel in Karen. Obviously, as I live around the corner I have not stayed here but instead it is one of my go to options for Sunday lunch.

Hemingways Nairobi

Hemingways Nairobi is the newest addition to the Hemingways Collection. It is a boutique hotel featuring 45 rooms sprawled over a lush green landscape at the base of the Ngong Hills. It boasts grounds so big that guests can request to be transported to their rooms in a golf cart!

Getting into Hemingways can be a bit of a challenge as the security men at the gate don’t always take too kindly to people who haven’t called ahead, but once through their high tech surveillance system you can get a glimpse of the enormous fairy tale castle that is the hotel.

The first thing I like about Hemingways is walking through their front door. A double set of dramatic wrought iron enclosed staircases ascend on either side of the hallway, making one feel that they are at a very grandiose establishment.

Can I Move In?

This is enhanced by an excellent selection of furniture on their part. The style is elegant safari with a vintage touch. Columns line the common area just to make sure you know that you are in the lap of luxury.

Thanks to Kenya’s lovely tropical weather we always sit outside in the garden for lunch. I think I have talked far too much about wine in my previous posts so below if a photo of the Hemingways Treat, a fabulously fruity mocktail.

Your 5 A Day

The brassiere has a very casual feel and serves excellent food. My Dad and I usually go for the steak, but my mum’s favourite of  the King Prawn Skewer, served with rice and garlic butter sauce is far more impressive looking.

On my last visit I ventured away from steak and had the pan fried pave of Norwegian Salmon, delicious!

After which I couldn’t possibly eat anymore, but then ordered the White & Dark Couverture Chocolate Mousse. It was fat free of course… well maybe not but I liked it.

Guilt

Once well fed, the grounds of Hemingways make for a perfect post-lunch waddle in a pointless attempt to shed the calories just consumed.

All in all Hemingways is great for a spot of lunch. If you are passing through Nairobi it is also very close to other attractions such as the Giraffe Manor, David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, and Nairobi National Park.
