What to see and do in Auckland
If you are planning a trip to New Zealand chances are you will end up spending a few days in Auckland.
As New Zealand’s biggest city it serves as a major flight hub for the country and is equally a great place to base yourself when exploring the North Island.
Be warned that although Auckland is big by New Zealand standards, you won’t get that traditional large city experience that you would in say Tokyo, but… Auckland has wineries so really what’s not to like?
With that said here are my top things to do in Auckland!
1) Start your day off with a croissant and coffee in leafy Parnell Auckland
Billed as Auckland’s oldest suburb, Parnell is now one of the most upmarket places to live in the city. The tree lined streets, gorgeous old mansions, and cute little cafes make it the perfect place to start your day.
2) Wander down to New Market for a spot of boutique shopping
A 10 minute walk from Parnell gets you to New Market, Auckland’s up and coming shopping district. The original shopping street is Queen’s Street where you can find your chain stores and department stores, but New Market is the place to be if boutique is more your thing.
3) Jump on the free city bus and head to Britomart for lunch
Originally Britomart was under the sea. It first came into existence as reclaimed land in the 1870’s and mainly consisted of warehouses for trading from the nearby harbour. The area fell into decline and was nearly demolished on several occasions until it was saved by a development tender in 2002.
Since then it has undergone huge transformation and is now buzzing with sleek restaurants and designer showrooms. A couple of the original warehouse buildings remain and now are home to trendy hipster cafes.
4) Swing by the Harbour and book your tickets for a day trip
There are several day trips leaving from the harbour each morning. Some of the most popular are to Waiheke Island to check out the wineries or Rangitoto for hiking
5) Pass out on a bean bag on Takutai square
This also just so happens to be right outside EY’s office… I know where I would be spending my lunch breaks if I worked there.
6) End your day with dinner in the Sky… Tower
If you like having dinner with a view, and let’s face it who doesn’t? Orbit at the Sky Tower might just fit the bill, resting at 190 meters off the ground with 360 views of the city this place is undoubtably a special occasion venue. Diners also receive complimentary access to the observation deck 220meters above the street, think about that instagram shot!
8) Before you hit the hay plan your next days outing to Hobbington or Piha Beach
Both are a drive away from Auckland city but totally worth visiting. Piha is a stunning black sand beach with good surf, though perhaps better for the more experienced surfers.
Hobbington really needs no introduction, if you are a LOTR fan it is a must!
** Disclaimer: I somehow managed to lose many of my Auckland photos so I used a few from related websites. If you click on the photo it will take you to the source 🙂 Unless of course it is mine.
